Monday 9 July 2007 par MOETIA

"Today, it is not a mourning but feastday, one day of memory." "E’ ere teie I te hö’ë mahana Heivara’a, E mahana Hevara’a." To recall our other mä’ ohi brothers who celebrated the festival of Autonomy.

Commemorative speech of the COJT: June 29, 2007

Ia ora Na to all!

Why are we here, this evening?

On June 29th , 1844, Fa’ a’ a was attacked by the commander of the frigate Uranie and its soldiers. That day, our ancestors died for having defended their fatherland against the French invader. The stele around which we are, this evening, was set up in their honor by our president Oscar Manutahi TEMARU in 1985. It also became the symbol of the resistance of the whole Mä’ohi people to colonialism. Resistance illustrated by the various wars which took place and which recalls us that our country was conquered by the weapons. Our ancestors thus deserve the respect. Today, it is not a mourning but feastday, one day of memory.

It is also one June 29 into which 1880 the King Pomare V and some chiefs signed the treaty of annexation of Tahiti, Mo’ orea, Tupua’i, Ra’ ivavae and the Tuamotu islands by France under the pressure and the blackmail. That day , our people were stripped of their ground, their dentity, their heart and their sovereignity. Sovereignity that France stole to us.

It is the whole Mä’ohi Nation who should be present here around this stele to mark its link with its history, the true one. The greatest homage which one can pay to our ancestors, it is to continue their combat. The youth of our "Fenua" ( country) must absolutely owe his history to carry out this combat in the long term: To recover Sovereignty that France stole to us. TI’ AMARA’ A! ( INDEPENDANCE)

The right to sovereignty is an inalienable and immutable right. One cannot conceal it, it is like the word of God. I will finish on this quotation of the Pope Leon XIII: "the first law of the History is not to dare to lie; the second, not to fear to express all the truth."

God blesses the Mä’ ohi People! Thank you for your attention!
